Hello, I am Jason Garrison. I am a UX Researcher with a focus on Qualitative data-gathering.

I'm driven to help people humanize and solve problems through story, empathy, and asking great questions. I do that by creating a safe and human research environment to understand people’s needs. I then draw on my background and training to analyze and synthesize complex data into themes. Lastly, I focus on straightforward storytelling, communicating insights toward solving specific problems.

I started my career as a teacher, creating learning experiences for my international students. Later, I coordinated a human-centered design project for vulnerable populations in Southeast Asia. I conducted mixed-methods research to gather insights and improve our programs with greater accessibility, creativity, and enjoyment.

As a UX Researcher, I’ve executed research for a range of audiences, from the world’s largest search engine, leading global social media companies, global banks, and multiple Fortune 500s to agile startups. In addition to leading research projects end-to-end, I’ve utilized Embedded Ethnography to highlight key Research Operations gaps and provided impactful recommendations that increased the value of UX Research within the organization.

If you work with me on a project, here are a few things you can expect:

Order from chaos. As an agency researcher, I’ve worked out an understanding of the timelines needed to deliver high-quality work according to study goals and client constraints.
Respect for persons. I love how humans work and aim to infuse my work with curiosity, respect, and dignity for others. That includes prioritizing diversity in recruitment, protecting participant safety and dignity during fielding, and protecting client and participant data.
Operations focus. Knowing and selecting the best tools for certain methods, creating clear responsibility frameworks, organizing and creating repositories, and providing coaching and upskilling are all aspects of the operational lens I bring to my research process.

Over six months, I used embedded ethnography to observe and understand the Research Operations gaps within the UX Research team of a global bank, which resulted in a dedicated task force and significant investment to establish a Research Ops foundation. This involved facilitating workshops, producing a detailed process map, designing operations resources and tools, and enhancing the intake process and research repository. These efforts increased the UX Research team's maturity and improved the team’s ability to conduct long-term, sustainable, strategic research.

2022

Lead research on high-leverage projects with American Express, SalesForce, Slack, Coinbase, Figma, FedEx, Wells Fargo, and MasterCard. Spearheaded research projects to gather high-impact qualitative data. Supported high-level KPIs with clear, actionable insights. Coached and contributed to significant UXR strategy decisions on developing client UX Research teams. Mentored junior UXRs from junior to mid-level in soft and technical skills.

Google

(via Akraya) Defined and developed studies to optimize internal tools for Google engineers. Led rapid research by engaging stakeholders to define and scope research problems, conducted in-depth interviews (IDIs) to gather actionable insights, and designed and presented report readouts to various product teams.

2021

Comcast

As a UX Writer, I collaborated with several teams to deliver digital content. I synthesized, shaped, and aligned content to comply with content and strategy guidelines. I initiated a push to conduct user research as a foundation for Comcast’s ULearn rebrand, resulting in a sustainability initiative to test and validate copy across various audiences.

Rocket Mortgage

Spearheaded the first-ever user research program for the Rocket Mortgage Mobile app. Analyzed demographic data, validated high-level product hypotheses with robust surveys, and conducted in-depth user interviews to provide stakeholders with user insights that they could turn into actionable results.

2020

UX Cabin

I designed a mobile app from concept testing to completion using various techniques, including user research, Figma design, prototyping, and usability testing. I conducted user interviews and designed surveys to understand users' needs and preferences. I mapped user journeys, developed personas, authored microcopy, and created wireframes.

2017-2020

Freelance Designer WordPress, Figma Web Design

Program Manager I managed, designed, and socialized ethnographic research studies that documented the language and cultural elements of a vulnerable population in Southeast Asia. This work bridged a gap between field observation and practical humanitarian aid. I used mixed-methods research to facilitate care for and understanding of this population.

2015-2017

History Teacher World History & International Studies teacher (Licensed by North Carolina DPI); Designed curriculum and aligned learning experiences to international standards. Facilitated international trips that synthesized curriculum goals with dynamic physical environments for students of various backgrounds.
